Cat Giardia Symptoms

Cat Giardia Symptoms

Giardia are small protozoan parasites that can infect cats. These small protozoa live in the cat's small intestines. Once infected, a cat will be a giardia carrier for life.

Time Frame

Symptoms of giardia are increased during stressful situations. This is why giardiasis commonly occurs among rescue and shelter animals.

Causes

A cat can pick up giardia in a number of ways, including drinking dirty, contaminated water, walking through infected areas and or being exposed to infected animals.

Symptoms

The first noticeable symptom of giardiasis is usually diarrhea or soft, discolored feces. Feces may also be covered in mucus. Other symptoms include excess gas, abdominal tenderness, loss of appetite and listlessness.

Considerations

It is very important to prevent dehydration; clean water should be easily available. A visit to a veterinarian is necessary for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Warning

Giradiasis is highly contagious and can be easily passed from one animal to another. The parasites can also be transferred to humans.
