How to Administer Oral Medicine to a Cat

When a cat becomes ill, the veterinarian may prescribe liquid medication. As many cat owners know, cats do not typically like to be forced to do anything. Therefore, it can be difficult to get a cat to take its medication. However, if a veterinarian prescribed it, the medication is necessary to make your cat better again.

Instructions

    1

Fill the medication dropper or oral syringe with the appropriate dosage for your cat.

    2

Wrap the cat tightly into a blanket. Leave only the head of the cat out. This prevents the cat from escaping.

    3

Hold the cat's head firmly with your non-dominant hand. Place your thumb on the jaw joint on one side of the cat's face and your fingers on the other side, holding your cat's head firmly in place, but not too tightly.

    4

Insert the dropper or syringe into the front of the cat's mouth. Push it in just past the line of teeth.

    5

Squirt the medication slowly into the cat's mouth. Administering the medication too quickly can cause the cat to choke. Pause several times to allow your cat to swallow.

    6

Remove the dropper or syringe once all the medication has been administered. Hold the cat's head for a few more seconds to ensure the mediation has been swallowed.

    7

Praise your cat and offer a treat. Make the experience a positive one. Pet your cat and talk lovingly to ensure the cat that all is okay.

    8

Rinse the dropper or syringe so it will be clean for the next use. Store the medication as directed on the bottle.
