The French bulldog is a descendant of mastiffs that were popular during ancient Greek times. During that time the sport of bull baiting was popular in which bulls and dogs were made to fight each other to the death. Phoenician traders were largely responsible to the distribution of this breed throughout Europe. With the decline of bull baiting, the remaining dogs used for this sport were converted into pets.

Almost similar to the English bulldog, it is much smaller. It does have a more compact and wider body with short legs, and also it sports pointy or pointier ears. In terms of temperament, the French bully is much friendlier than its English counterpart and it is much safer to leave in the presence of small animals and even children.

It does however always make an excellent companion according to owners of the breed. Even then, the French bully is a dog that demands or hoards attention all the time. Should it feel that its attention needs are not being met, it will let out a ululating sound which many have termed as the French death yodel. Females of this breed can be expected to be very protective of their young and of those around her.

Their compact airways, due to their physical build, and their snub noses make for some complications. Due to having these two characteristics this dog will have problems regulating their body temperature, especially when there are conditions of extreme hot or cold weather. Any extreme weather condition will in fact kill this breed. It is thus advised that if you should want to acquire a breed such as this, that you at least live in a temperate area in terms of weather and climate.

It is also a dog that has a fairly short lifespan amongst breeds, averaging only eight to ten years at most. Although this can be somewhat be extended with proper care and maintenance. Expect also that your French bully will develop some form of eye complication like cataracts, as it grows older.

This dog is really built for small space and indoor living, as this breed is quite at home not moving around and just sitting still. It needs at least 30 minutes walk everyday. This is definitely a dog to have if you live in a small city apartment or condo.

In sum these are the general items that you should consider and mull over before getting this puppy into your home. Always remember that getting a pet is a serious commitment and you should always get as much information on whatever pet you feel you should have.
