Important Details About Roof Installation

By Andrew B. Spates

Each step during the process of constructing a house is crucial. Laying of the foundation, erecting supporting structures and most importantly installing of a roof are very important. The roof is not something that should be done in a hurry or with saving of costs. It offers protection against harsh weather elements and should thus be strong and long lasting. Roof installation should be properly done to have a long-lasting structure.

In the event that there is an existing roof, it will need to be brought down before a new one gets installed. This is vital because some people will opt for installation of new roofs over existing ones. When too many layers, asphalt for instance, are added to the existing structure, it is likely to lead to premature failure. There should be removal of the existing roof first.

After old roofs have been removed, sheathing will need to be properly evaluated. They are usually made of flat panels that offer structural support as well as a base. Roofing materials like shingles are normally attached to that base. As that happens, the installer will look for moist areas or those with spots which may bring trouble and that should be replaced.

For people residing in areas which are prone to ice, even for short periods during the year, they should install water and ice barriers around the roofs. The barrier will go along the roofs and especially so at the bottom sections. Such are the areas which are prone to the build-up of ice. There is sticky underlayment that adheres to sheathing that is then nailed down to ensure there is additional strength and stability.

The drip edge for roofing goes down in two parts of the installation. When it comes to lower parts of the roof, it will go before under-layment while for the sides it goes after. To begin with, you need to install a metal drip edge along the edges at the bottom of the roofs over top of the water and ice barrier. It should be nailed into place flat against the roof.

The installation technique is dependent on type of roofing which you choose. Clay tile roofs, shingles and corrugated metal roofs all require different techniques when being installed. This means that even when choosing the right person to do the installation, it should be someone with the right experience.

All through the process, there are pipes or vents that should be sealed. They are sealed using special rubber boots. These work by preventing any protrusion.
