Similarly, one should only wear a lighter shade of eye protection when the visibility of the arc is not clear.

The model of machine being used determines how starting the arc happens. Some machines start the arc by making contact between the work piece and the torch. On the other hand, other machines start the arc using a high voltage circuit and a high frequency.
