Herbs for Cats With Kidney Problems

A common health issue of aging cats is kidney disease. Since antibiotic treatments don't help cats with kidney problems, herbs for cats with kidney problems can bring their health back to becoming relatively normal. Natural herbs can slow down, halt or reverse the destructive progression of kidney problems, disease and failure.

Preventative

If you notice the symptoms of kidney problems in your cat early enough such as nausea, lack of appetite, vomiting, low energy and depression you can give him herbs that will help strengthen his kidneys. Herbs that are used for improving kidney function and kidney tissue are dandelion leaf, alfalfa herb and burdock root. Before giving your cat any herbal remedies you should consult an animal herbalist that is experienced recommending herbs for kidney problems.

Treatment

Read the ingredients of any herbal treatment before administering it to your cat to make sure it doesn't contain white willow bark, caffeine, or white oak bark as they can be fatal. If you choose to give the herbs to your cat by pill form, you must make them comfortable enough to make it easier for him to swallow the pill. You must show patience and not make him nervous or frustrated in order get through this process. While sitting, place your cat between your knees and rub them for a while to help them relax. Hold the pill between your index finger and thumb with one hand and place your palm of the other hand on top of the cat's head while placing that index finger and thumb on either side of his mouth. As you tilt your cat's head back his mouth should fall open and you can drop the pill as far back as possible into his mouth. Allow your cat to slightly lower his head as you rub his throat and neck until he swallows the pill but don't keep his head tilted back. Give him a meal of moist food to help the pill dissolve in his stomach. If the herb you're giving your cat is a capsule, it is best if the capsule is wet to make it easier to slide down his throat. After trying to get your cat to take herbs in pill and capsule and not having much success, you can also try powder form and mix it in his food per the instructions given. You should discontinue herbal treatments if your cat's condition worsens and notify the veterinarian of your concerns.
