Joint Problems in a 15-Year-Old Cat

Joint Problems in a 15-Year-Old Cat

As cats age, some parts of their bodies begin to wear out. The joints are a common area of ailment after a certain age. Problems with the joints of older cats can be caused by different things and affect different areas of the body.

Types of Joint Problems

Arthritis is the most widely known joint problem for aging pets. Osteoporosis and calcium deficits that affect bone health are common in humans but are in fact exceedingly rare in animals. Hypothyroidism, also common in humans and familiar to many cat owners, is also a possible source of joint pain and weakness in a cat. For a proper diagnosis of an older cat's joint pain, tests including X-rays from a veterinarian are required.

Common Areas of Pain

Cats experience joint pain all over their bodies. The most common joint pain sets in around the shoulders, and the joints of the front legs. Some particular breeds of cat are considered more susceptible to different areas of joint pain. Persian cats, for example, are known to develop age-related arthritis in their hips or hind legs.

Signs of Joint Problems

Cats are typically not expressive of their physical pain, as other house pets can be. Arthritis, as opposed to other conditions, often experiences some relief after a rest, and some variation from day to day in the amount of pain and range of motion. Unlike dogs and humans, arthritic cats do not typically have visibly enlarged joints. Cats' joint pain is expressed in a reluctance to move or jump as they have in the past, and irritation with other pets that they used to get along with. If there is a step up to a litter box, cats may avoid making the step and relieve themselves next to the box. Some nipping or expression of pain may be present if their legs are forced to extend or stretch.

Preventative Care

Many of the joint problems that cats experience in their later years stem from activity and nutrition when they were kittens. Some preventative care early in life can help a cat avoid major joint pain later in life. Avoid overfeeding cats, or feeding them very rich food when they are young. Obesity and fast growth may not appear to affect a young cat or kitten, but the stress put on their developing bones will lead them to deteriorate much sooner than they may have otherwise. Pet arthritis is considered primarily genetic, so learning about a kitten's parents' histories may indicate what trouble may come down the line.

Keeping Cats Comfortable

Older cats that are experiencing joint pain have special needs to stay comfortable. Unfortunately, cats cannot take the over the counter or prescription pain killers that humans and even dogs can. Many pain medications are fatal to a cat, and are to be used only to keep the cat comfortable as the end of life approaches. Cats living with joint pain need a moist diet, canned or fresh proteins and fats. Additional warmth is also very helpful. Consider a heated blanket to keep the cat's bedding warmed to about 100 F. For getting around, use low-angle ramps up to favorite spots so the cat can access them easily. Keep bowls low and with shallow, low sides so the cat can easily eat and drink without straining the neck or shoulders. Consider a small ramp up to the litter box, if this is a problem.

Reasons to Spay a Female Cat

Reasons to Spay a Female Cat

While many people find kittens adorable and cuddly, there are simply too many of them for the number of available homes. You can reduce the number of unwanted kittens and help your female cat live a happier, healthier life by getting her spayed. Spaying is a routine surgery for veterinarians, and the health risks are minimal compared to the risks of pregnancy.

Health Reasons for Spaying

Spaying a female cat eliminates the risk of ovarian or uterine cancer, and greatly reduces the risk of mammary gland cancers. It also prevents health problems and complications associated with pregnancy. Unspayed cats that come into heat but don't get pregnant can develop pyometra, a potentially fatal infection of the uterus.

Behavioral Reasons for Spaying

Female cats in heat can be downright obnoxious, and they can come into heat three to four times a year. They may start spraying urine, and they yowl and pace constantly if kept indoors. The female will try to escape at any opportunity in order to find a mate, which leaves her open to being attacked by strange animals or run over by cars. Spayed female cats are calmer, don't have the urge to spray or seek out males.

Societal Reasons for Spaying

Spaying female cats prevents unwanted litters of kittens. A female cat can have multiple litters per year, and there are simply not enough homes for all of the kittens born every year. Shelters destroy seven out of 10 cats taken in simply because no one wanted to adopt them.

Other Reasons for Spaying

A female cat in heat attracts intact males from a wide area. They may spray the area around your house, and engage in noisy cat fights while you are trying to sleep. The cost of spaying your female cat is less than the cost of caring for one litter of kittens in a year.

Symptoms of Dehydration in a Cat

According to symptomsofdehydration.com, dehydration in cats is caused by excessive heat, illnesses, and fever. There are signs a cat will exhibit when she is dehydrated, and some are more obvious than others. If you detect any symptoms of dehydration in your cat, call your veterinarian.

Panting

Cats do not have sweat glands like humans do, so when they get dehydrated, they will pant. If your cat is dehydrated, she will pant to help regulate his body temperature.

Diarrhea

Occasional diarrhea in your cat is not usually a cause for alarm; however, if your cat has frequent diarrhea, this may be a sign of dehydration.

Frequent Urination

Ironically, frequent urination may be a result of dehydration and not a result of excessive amounts of fluids. Look for other symptoms to ensure dehydration is the cause.

Vomiting

A cat may also vomit consistently in response to dehydration.

Skin Elasticity

A decrease in your cat's skin elasticity is often a determining factor of dehydration, although it is the most difficult to detect, according to petplace.com, especially if she is obese. Obese cats' skin will normalize quicker when you perform a skin elasticity (or skin pinch) test due to the extra fat in their bodies.

Information Dog Owners Should Know Regarding Endocrine Alopecia in Felines

There are many reasons why cats can experience problems with hair loss. A relatively rare reason for this to occur is because of feline endocrine alopecia. Vets don't exactly know why this rare skin condition occurs.

Whenever it does develop though, your cat's hair will start thinning. Various areas of the body will be affected by hair loss. You may notice that these areas appear to be the same on both sides of the body. Two areas that are most often affected include the rear legs and abdominal region.

Certain other medical conditions can mimic the signs caused by feline endocrine alopecia. To see if your cat is really suffering from this condition, the vet will have to rule out other possible causes of the hair loss first. Parasites and conditions like ringworm can cause similar signs.

In order to make a diagnosis of endocrine alopecia in cats, vets typically look at a sample of hairs under a microscope. Doing so can help determine at what stage of their growth the hair were broken. Skin scrapings around the affected area can also help determine what's causing hair loss in your cat. Fungal infections like ringworm can easily cause signs.

A blood sample may also be in order if your vet suspects feline endocrine alopecia to be the problem. The sample won't be tested in the office though. A laboratory will need to inspect it to see how the endocrine system is functioning as far as hormones go.

As mentioned earlier, vets don't know why cat endocrine alopecia develops. Hormones like testosterone, estrogen, or thyroid hormone are some of the leading suspects though. Cats with the condition may need to start a regimen of hormone therapy to deal with it.

Cats that are eating foods that they're allergic to may experience spontaneous hair loss. Therefore, you may need to start your cat on a food trial to see if it helps relieve the signs. You may need to start feeding your cat a different type of food.

Sometimes, feline endocrine alopecia is treated with medications that are designed to grow the hair back. This isn't always the preferred method of treatment in cats though. These medications can lead to serious side effects in some felines. They can be toxic to the liver over time and also cause cardiac problems.

Cats may even develop other conditions like diabetes mellitus after taking these medications. Some even experience changes in their behavior.

It is vital that cat owners be aware that their feline can be affected by many different conditions such as feline chlamydia . Learning this information will help you recognize signs of disease quickly. To learn about some of these feline diseases , click over to common-cat-diseases.com today.

Everything Owner's Need to Know About Bordetella in Cats

Dog owners are likely familiar with kennel cough. Cats can also develop a version of the disease known as feline bordetella although it is much less common. The bacteria responsible for this illness is closely related to bacteria that causes the disease in dogs and humans.

The bacteria responsible for bordetella in cats is known as Bordetella bronchiseptica. If the bacteria infects your cat, it will lead to respiratory issues. The risk of becoming infected with it also rises dramatically if your kitty has a viral infection of some sort.

Cat bordetella is highly contagious, and coughing or sneezing is enough to transmit the bacteria.. Shelters can especially experience problems since there are plenty of felines in close proximity to each other. The disease can easily pass between animals if there are multiple cats in the household. Dogs have also been known to pass the disease to cats in some cases.

Adults with feline bordetella usually don't have any trouble getting over the infection. However, kittens can be devastated by the disease and even die from it if it progresses. Signs of an infection are very similar to other upper respiratory infections such as herpes virus and calicivirus.

Despite the fact that bordetella in cats is often referred to as kennel cough, coughing isn't quite as common with felines as it is with dogs battling the disease. Most cats will experience discharge from the nose and sneezing. Discharge may also come from the eyes. Other possible signs of the condition include depression, loss of appetite, and fever.

Cat bordetella doesn't always lead to noticeable signs. Your feline may simply be a carrier of the disease. Carriers don't display signs, but are capable of passing the disease on to other animals.

As mentioned, the signs of feline bordetella are quite similar to other respiratory infections. Simply taking a look at your cat won't be enough to make a proper diagnosis of this condition. That's why the veterinarian will need to rule those other possibilities out. A swab of the nose will need to be done.

Kittens with the disease will likely need to be provided with supportive care. Antibiotics are the main way that bordetella in felines is treated. Since there are various types of antibiotics, the vet needs to choose which specific one he thinks will be most effective.

Owners should know that there is a vaccination to protect against feline bordetella. It is usually best to get your cat vaccinated against the disease even if he or she is an adult. At the very least, you should discuss your options with your vet.

Hopefully, you're aware that there are many different conditions that can affect your cat such as ringworm in cats . Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex (EGC) in Cats - Part 2

So, Lilly came back two weeks later.  Check it out!  The owner reported that the long-acting steroid injection seemed to work immediately, and the lip ulcer started getting smaller.  The foot responded pretty well, too, she said, with the lateral lesion resolving, and the larger medial lesion shrinking noticeably.  As you can see, the erosion on the upper lip is about 75% improved:

The cat is almost looking like a normal kitty!  The lateral lesion on the foot is indeed gone, but the medial lesion is still present and is a little raw looking.  The owner said that it started to resolve, but about three days ago the cat started licking at it, and it started to appear worse, unfortunately.

I gave a second steroid injection today.  The textbooks say that you can give up to three injections, as often as every two weeks.  I’m reluctant to do that.  I gave a second injection today, and in three weeks I’ll have her back for a recheck, at which time I hope the condition is totally resolved.  I will do some bloodwork at that time, to make sure that there’s been no adverse effects from the injection, like diabetes.  Right now, the cat is fine.  Eating and drinking normally, no coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.  She feels great.  If the condition is totally resolved in three weeks, I will probably start the cat on 5 mg of prednisolone every other day, to maintain the skin..  If the skin stays normal for a few months, I will probably try to wean the cat off of all medication.  Check back in three weeks to see how things turn out!

How to Care For a Day-Old Kitten

Kittens are usually cared for by heir moms. However, like all things in nature, Darwinianism kicks in and only few of the offspring will survive. I have encountered twice the particular case of a cat who simply will not care for her babies, being equally disinterested in whether they live or die. So for the best part of the next four weeks I acted like a nursing cat mother for three little kittens. Needless to say, when they're a few hours old, they're hardly bigger than a very small mouse each.

There's two things they need to survive: warmth and food. You can solve the first issue with a couple of 2 litres plastic bottles filled with hot water that you put it in their nesting place. A shoe box will suffice for that. Also, try making them comfortable by adding a towel or any cloth you won't need ever again so they have a soft floor. The water will need changing every few hours, depending on how fast it will cool.

Next issue is a bit of a nuisance. You'll have to buy a baby bottle for kittens. There are many available at pet shops, you cannot improvise around it, trust me on that, I've tried. The thing that came nerare to a baby bottle was a 2ml syringe, but you run the risk of pumping too fast and choking them. Plus, they can't draw from it. So go get the baby bottle. Then for the food. You can either buy special powder milk that has all the surplus they need from a lactating mother, just ask the veterinarian for it, or use your own milk from the store. Either way is fine, the powder milk is pricey but better, but they won't die for the lack of it. Next buy eggs, a whole basket of them, you're going to need them. Break an egg and clear the yolk. Only the yolk! Put the yolk in a cup. Add a bit of milk and mix. Then add a spoon of honey and milk up to about 200ml and mix. Honey helps the kittens' digestion a lot, it's not just for the taste of it. When you have about 200ml of mixed product make sure it's warm and fill up the baby bottle. Then pick each of them up and start feeding them. You'll have to be patient, although at first they're probably be starving and will draw like there's no tomorrow. You will have to repeat that every three hours and twice at night.

My advice is to have more food mixed so you only have to warm it, it saves a lot of time not having to mix it all each and every time they need feeding. After four weeks they will probably learn to drink by themselves and you're off the hook, although there's no timeframe guaranteed about that. I had one crazy kitten who refused to let go of the baby bottle for three months!

If you follow these steps it will be hard on your part but your kittens WILL live. Constant feeding and warmth is all there really is to it. And patience.

Pet Owner's Guide to Enteritis in Felines

Enteritis in cats is a very serious disease. It's often referred to as distemper, which is a disease that dogs commonly get. However, feline enteritis isn't the same. A common other name for the condition is panleukopenia.

This disease normally strikes kittens younger than six months old. However, older cats also have a relatively increased risk of developing it. Older cats may be strong enough to fight off the affliction, but kittens can easily succumb to it.

Feline enteritis is caused by a virus. Wild animals such as cats and raccoons can harbor the highly contagious virus. Infected animals can pass it to your cat by coming into direct contact with him. If your cat comes into contact with nasal or oral secretions, he can get infected too.

Owners should also know that the virus that causes enteritis in cats can also contaminate items such as bedding, litter boxes, and food dishes. Owners can also pass the virus along to their cats because it's capable of contaminating human hands.

After being infected with feline enteritis, your cat may not show any symptoms for up to ten days. Common signs include high fever and loss of appetite. Cats may also vomit frequently, producing yellow-tinted bile in the process. If you touch your cat in the abdominal region, he may cry out in pain. It is also common for cats to have diarrhea and produce stool that also has a yellow color, although it may appear to have blood in it instead.

As mentioned, enteritis in cats is quite serious. That's why it is important that you get your cat checked out and diagnosed with the condition as soon as possible. The chances of your cat surviving a bout with this virus rise considerably the earlier that treatment is started.

There is no way to battle the virus that causes cat enteritis directly. The vet will simply need to provide supportive measures to help your cat make it through the disease. Antibiotics will likely be given to stave off any bacterial infections. IV fluids and nutrition therapy may also be necessary.

It is very easy to prevent enteritis in cats. Simply have your feline vaccinated. The virus can live virtually anywhere in your home, so your kitten would be at risk if left unvaccinated. Using a standard disinfectant won't be enough to kill the virus either.

If your cat survives an episode of feline enteritis, then you should be aware that he will continue to shed the virus for a few weeks. Other cats in the household can easily be infected. The good news is that cats that survive an infection from the virus will be relatively safe from reinfection since their immune system will be boosted.

Learning about these conditions will help you get your cat treated quickly in case he does fall ill. To learn about a range of cat health problems , head on over to common-cat-diseases.com today.

Owner's Guide to Cat Tapeworms

There are many parasites that can give cats problems. Feline tapeworms are some of the most common. These white worms are capable of growing approximately eight inches long if they live long enough. Thanks to the suckers and hooks that Mother Nature equipped them with, they're capable of attaching themselves to the walls of the small intestine of your cat.

Cats typically don't experience many problems if they're infested with just a few of them. However, tapeworms in cats can cause serious problems as their numbers increase. They will keep your feline from getting the proper nutrition from their food, eventually causing them to shed pounds. Their fur will also undergo changes, becoming rough and dull.

To understand how feline tapeworms infect cats, you first need to understand a bit about their life cycle. As you know, fleas can easily infect your cat. Sometimes, fleas will harbor cysticercoids, which are formed when flea larvae eat tapeworm eggs. If your cat bites at an area infested with infected fleas, he may end up swallowing one.

After eating an infected flea, the small intestine will break it down and leave the cysticercoids to develop into adult cat tapeworms. This is when they will attach themselves to the small intestine walls and sustain themselves with the nutrients that your cat is supposed to get from his food.

Feline tapeworms are segmented. As they grow, segments will break off and pass out of the body through the feces. Owners who inspect their cat's feces will likely notice them. They look like small grains of rice that are moving around. Some of these segments may also appear around the anus.

Your vet can determine if your cat has tapeworms quite easily. He will simply have to take a look at a sample of your cat's feces under a microscope. They aren't always easy to see via the naked eye.

Fortunately, tapeworms in cats are usually easy to deal with. You will need to give your cat dewormer medication in order to get rid of them. One cycle of this medication may not be enough to get rid of the infestation entirely though.

Parasites such as fleas and lice play a vital role in the transmission of feline tapeworms. Therefore, owners need to do their best to control these parasites so that their cat doesn't get infested with worms. Limiting the amount of time that your cat spends outside roaming around will help. Giving him dewormer medication on a regular basis will also be useful.

As an owner, it's important that you know about various health problems like endocrine alopecia in felines that can affect your furry friend. In case your cat does fall ill, knowing about these different conditions will help you recognize it quickly. It is often called the house cat when kept as an indoor pet, or simply the cat when there is no need to distinguish it from other felids and felines. The cat are valued by humans for companionship and ability to hunt vermin and household pests.

Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscular and predatory ecological niche. Can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small game. They can see in near darkness. Like most mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans.

Despite being solitary hunters, them are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling and grunting) as well as pheromones and types of cat-specific body language.

Cats have a rapid breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy. Failure to control the breeding of pet cats by spaying and neutering, and the abandonment of former household pets, has resulted in large numbers of feral cats worldwide, with a population of up to 60 million of these animals in the United States alone, while in Japan they are caught and disposed of.

Feed Natural Cat Food For Better Health

Food is an integral part of overall development. The composition and nutritional value of the food you serve to your pets matter a lot. Taste is something that appeals everyone, including your pets. If you own a cat, you must be aware how finicky cats can be towards food. Cats are strict meat eaters compared to other omnivorous pets, such as dogs. Hence, their nutritional composition mainly comprises of animal protein and amino acid called taurine. The deficiency of these two elements in the food can cause diseases, such as deterioration of the retina, deprivation of vision, and cardiac harm.

Hence, you need to choose cat food with utmost care. The food should be high in protein and less in carbohydrates. However, many cat foods have artificial flavors and preservatives which may not provide adequate nutrition as promised. It is here when you should actively think about natural cat food. Natural cat food has the required composition which is of utmost importance for the overall well being of your cat.

These foods are made from natural ingredients and have no fillers, genetically modified ingredients, artificial colours, flavors or preservatives. It tries to retain as much natural taste and ingredients as possible. This allows your cat to get natural vitamins and proteins for absorption. When you are looking for natural ingredients look for human grade cat food. Human grade cat food ensures that the food that you feed your cat is made out of the best natural ingredients of human edible quality. These foods offer superior nutritional benefits.

The advantages of carefully picking up the graded food include your pet's longevity and agility. Some foods may make your pet overly obese and inactive. This is largely because of increased fat ingredients and less of the proteins in the food. This can lead to many diseases and decrease your pet's age too.

However, human grade cat food has natural ingredients, which ensures that your pet gets essential fatty acids and proteins. This helps your cat get healthy coat, it increases immunity against skin ailments and allergies as these foods are free from artificial color enhancers and flavors which may induce a reaction on your pet's skin.

Because natural foods have no fillers, your pets will eat what is required and will also enjoy better taste. This also gives them more energy and helps them in maintaining a healthy weight. Natural foods are easy to digest, so your cat will stay away from digestive disorders. Give a healthy and more natural diet and avoid any health hassles in your cat.

Are Cats Smart or Dumb?

Love them or hate them cats are just hard to ignore. I love cats, but I have often wondered about just how smart they really are? For that reason I've collected a few videos of cats and their reactions to things! So you be the judge and tell me what you think!

Over the years, I've read, or heard so many different things about whether our friends are smart or clever and now I have a few words for you folks. Probably most of would say that cats are not smart because unlike dogs they aren't obedient, won't do tricks, and won't come when they are called. But, that's not a reason to call them stupid, as cats only do things when they want.

Yep, that's the thing with cats! They seems to do what they want and when they want. So if we love them enough and treat them right, maybe then they will be more willing to cooperate with us.

Anyway here are some videos of cats doing "clever things" and not so "clever things".

Meet the white cat that goes nuts after seeing its reflection in the mirror! This kitty is so popular at the moment that over the last few days it got more than 500,000 views on the Internet! It appears to me as if the angry white kitty has an imaginary conversation with his white, fluffy foe. And judging by the sounds it seems like they are having a pretty tense conversation.

Anyway, it would be better for you to avoid any contact with the white crazy cat as one can only imagine what would happen if the cat gets mad at you! Yep, it's that serious! Or this kitty here. Now, this is a way funnier situation! This cat gets totally confused after a dog shows up on the screen while his owner plays the video game 'Assassin's Creed' 3.

At first the cat seems so calm and peaceful while its owner is playing Assassin's Creed, but that comes to end as soon as it sees dogs on the screen! It flips out and starts searching the dogs behind the TV screen, because they show up and then they walk off the screen! But unfortunately for the cat, there are no dogs to be found behind the big TV screen! And that goes on and on.

Nonetheless, just like people, some cats are clever, some are not!

Grumpy Cat Inspires Grumpy Art

Once she went online she became an internet sensation, and now the Grumpy Cat called Tard has served as an inspiration to some incredible works of art.

Her grumpy face has appeared on numerous T-shirts, mugs, and it was memefied thousands of times. It even inspired some people to create pumpkin carvings and costumes for the recent "trick or treat" holiday, i.e., Halloween.

Before I go on with some genuine pieces of art inspired by Grumpy, I want to share some basic info about the grumpiest cat ever.

Tard's Road to Fame

Known as Tardar Sauce or Tard, the cat with the grumpiest face ever rose to the Internet fame after a photo of her was posted on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

According to Knowyourmeme.com, the scowl-faced kitty got upvoted more than 25,300 times on Reddit, and it was viewed more that million times on Imgur.

And eventually it got even her own video!

Is Tard Really Grumpy?

If you ask Tard's owner Tabatha, you will probably get a No, as an answer. According to her, that's just her face.

"Tardar has what looks kind of like an under bite. She looked unique, as did her brother, at birth, with a flat face, bubble eyes, and a short tail," says Tabatha, adding:

"Tardar is not as coordinated as a normal cat, so she is likely a little angry about that. I think she likes to be held and petted some times, but being the pet of a 10 year old could make anyone grumpy."

Grumpy's Family

Apart from living with Tabatha, Tard also shares the same roof with her mommy Callie, brother Pokey, three newborn kittens, a dog (brother) named Shaggy, a dog (sister) named Honey, a dog (grandmother) called Raven, and the most important family member, her 10 year old co-owner Chyrstal Bundesen. Ah, I hope I didn't leave out anyone!

Grumpy Art Inspired by TardAndhere comes the art, finally! The Grumpy Cat in the act of being grumpyThe Halloween-related memeOne of my favorite Gumpy cat memesThe Grumpy cat cardThe Grumpy Cat portrait

Hope you enjoyed in the grumpy inspired art above, and didn't get grumpy yourself! If you did, then I hope these cat gifs will cheer you up, since it's Monday and the week has just started!

The Truth Regarding Chlamydia in Felines

Both bacteria and viruses can cause conjunctivitis in cats. This condition is known as pink eye, the same thing that can affect dogs, humans, and other animals. Feline chlamydia results from a bacterial infection. Cats are usually infected with other viruses along with this disease like herpes virus and calicivirus.

Chlamydia in cats usually affects those at the younger or older end of the spectrum. Those with damaged immune systems or other illness of some sort have an increased risk too. However, the bacterial infection can cause symptoms in any cat.

There is an assortment of ways that feline chlamydia can be transmitted. The bacteria can be passed via eye discharge, nose secretions, or saliva from infected cats. Mothers are also capable of transmitting the disease to their kittens while giving birth.

You should also know that it's possible chlamydia in cats to be transmitted in indirect ways. The bacteria can live in bedding, food dishes, and other places and can infect your cat if he comes into contact with them. Owners can also harbor the bacteria on their hands and pass it along to their felines.

Seeing the white of your cat's eyes turn red is one of the primary signs of feline chlamydia. The eye may also swell, with the third eyelid closing partially. Discharge that's very watery may also appear from the eyes. All of this will irritate your cat's eye, causing him to paw at it frequently. This illness may only cause symptoms in one eye at first. Eventually though, both eyes will likely experience problems. As mentioned, chlamydia in cats usually occurs at the same time as other respiratory conditions. Cats may have a fever, discharge from the nose, coughing, and sneezing if this occurs.

Feline chlamydia doesn't usually prove difficult to treat as long as it's mild. Antibiotics can get rid of the bacteria. They may be given orally or placed directly in the affected eyes. The condition can get more problematic though if there are other problems at the same time. Your cat may have an upper respiratory illness that requires hospitalization.

Whenever giving your cat antibiotics to treat any condition, it's vital to go through the entire regimen. If you don't, then the bacteria you're trying to get rid of may mutate and grow stronger. If this happens, they may become resistant to the antibiotics.

If you have multiple cats in your household, then you'll especially need to be careful with feline chlamydia. It can easily be transmitted to other cats. Keep infected cats in seclusion. Disinfect bedding, food dishes, and other places that can harbor the bacteria. Also, make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly after you touch the infected cat so that you don't spread it to your other felines.

As an owner, it's important that you know about various health problems like rhinotracheitis in felines that can affect your furry friend. In case your cat does fall ill, knowing about these different conditions will help you recognize it quickly. So, head over to common-cat-diseases.com today to learn about many of these common cat diseases .

Heated Dogs Beds and Heated Cat Beds Can Provide Great Arthritis Relief

For any pet owner, providing a loving and comfortable environment is just one small way of returning the unconditional love and devotion our four-footed companions endlessly provide. For some of these faithful friends, as the years creep closer to old age, they can begin to show signs of achy joints and various level of discomfort associated with arthritis. Perhaps you have noticed that they are a little stiff after a nap, or that they appear to have some pain or stiffness in cold or damp weather. Whatever you have witnessed, seeing your loved one in pain breaks your heart and you simply want to provide some level of relief. Of course, your vet must be an integral part of any dog or cat's physical needs program. But in my quest to provide as much relief and comfort possible for my aging pals, I have found a few low tech tips that are particularly effective at providing relief.

Just like in humans, one of the best forms of relief for joint pain is providing warmth. You may think this sounds non-sophisticated, but it works. It is particularly important to provide warmth to your pet's body during colder temperatures or on damp days. This type of weather can cause joints to become especially stiff or swollen. The heat works to relax muscles and their spasms which are caused by the pain. Relaxed muscles relieve stress on the joints and provide overall improved joint flexibility. The heat also allows blood vessels to expand increasing circulation to the affected areas. Although a hot water bottle can be used, this is a very temporary heat source, quickly dissipating and requires constant attention. The best way to provide continual warmth is through a heated dog bed or a heated cat bed. Once your pet begins to feel the soothing warmth on his sore and painful joints, his heated pet bed will became an oasis of relief. The heated pet bed will also give your dog or cat relief from sleeping on the hard surface of the floor which tends to only aggravates the arthritic condition. Arthritis is a degenerative disease of the joints and if your pet continues to sleep on floors that are hard and cold this could actually cause the arthritis to worsen. Lastly, the soothing warmth will have a calming effect on your pet and allow for a restful sleep.

An essential part of the plan I have placed my aging pets on is nutritional supplements. Just like in humans, nutritional elements can affect the wellness of your pet's body and its ability to support joint health. The most common natural supplement recommended for the relief of arthritis in dogs and cats is glucosamine. Glucosamine is the primary glue that keeps connective tissue and bone together and may help alleviate joint pain and discomfort. It has also been reported to be useful in the prevention of arthritis. Additionally, Sea Cucumber and Shark Cartilage are both reported to be excellent sources of a host of minerals and protein that may supply the therapeutic protection for joints and the surrounding tissues our pet needs. I have given all three of these supplements to my arthritic pets and have found positive response and relief for my pets each time I have used them.

I believe one of my dog's favorite forms of relief from arthritis pain is slow and gentle massage. Slow and gentle massage is the only type of massage we should conduct ourselves. Anything more intense should be done by a professional or under instruction from your veterinarian. Massage not only provides a loving bond between you and your pet, but it loosens and relaxes the muscles which will tighten with the onset of pain. The blending of massage and a heated pet bed will definitely provide a winning combination.

Cat Symptoms You Should Be Aware Of

Owning a pet is not all just fun and games. Cats are one of the most affectionate and loyal pets around. A lot of responsibility comes with taking home a new pet. Just like humans, house pets get sick and need lots of love and attention. Having a housecat is not the same as owning a dog, a rabbit or any other household pet, each has to be taken care of in a particular way and each has its own common ailments. There are many cat symptoms that every pet owner should be aware of to keep their feline in tip-top shape.

If you ever hear your cat making a funny noise, listen carefully, because your pet may have a cough. It may sound cute, but it should be taken seriously. A cough may lead to a fever, difficulty in breathing and discharge from both the cat's eyes and nose. Anything from a collar that is too tight to asthma can cause a cat to cough. If the cough seems minor, it is okay to give it treatment at home. However, if your cat is having trouble breathing, is wheezing, has a loss of appetite and is visibly losing weight, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately. Coughs can be a sign of the following cat symptoms, heartworms, bronchitis and asthma.

Many say that cats are picky eaters. Being a choosy eater and being anorexic are two completely different things. When a pet refuses to chow down on its pet food it is usually a cause for concern, but more so when it comes to felines. Cats that do not eat can potentially cause liver damage. Some cat symptoms that can be a factor to loss of appetite are illness, new surroundings and recent vaccinations. Anytime that your cat completely refuses to eat should be a red flag. There are a few stimulants you can give to your cat to encourage it to eat but it is always best to consult a veterinarian beforehand.

Cats are not known for their minty fresh breath. However, their breath should have a tolerable aroma. If your cat seems to have bad breath or halitosis there could be a concealed medical condition. A lot of the times the bad breath may be triggered by plaque or gum disease but in some cases even a cats diet can affect the way their breath smells. However, if the odor becomes extremely foul smelling, it could be the indication of more serious health problems like problems in the mouth area, respiratory system and liver. By visiting the veterinarian, proper treatment can be given to your cat and any further concerns you have can be addressed.

Many assume that giving the veterinarian a call should be reserved for emergencies. The fact of the matter is, when you are dealing with a pet that obviously cannot tell you how it feels, it is always a good idea to be aware of the possible symptoms and signs of illnesses. Whenever you are in doubt, call the veterinarian. Never risk the health of your beloved pet.

Are you ready for a new Cat?

Sometimes the cat suddenly appears at the House. Meet a homeless kitten on the street, I feel sorry for him and bring him home. Or someone you know, for some reason must get rid of the cat and finds herself under threat of life on the street or in a shelter, and take a cat with sympathy for the animals. You know that you can do the right thing, and this is indeed true. But you can bring home a cat and realize that both of you have to overcome a long period of adjustments and get used to each other. And here you have to show patience and love, because the cat may feel frustrated, anxious, or on the contrary, may be reduced due to new home, new environment, changes in nutrition, disease, and many other things. And in this case only once, understanding and caring will help you to get along and become friends with your pet. Lovely kitten Well, what do you do if the decision about a cat for home is not spontaneous? You need to make a balanced decision, which approval should include all members of the family. Choosing a cat generally depends on the purpose for which you need it. If you're single and need a companion, you should choose a breed that fits the temperament, so you're never bored with each other, or vice versa, so that the cat does not annoy You by excessive activity if you like peace and order. Or maybe you want to show your dog exhibitions? Then think about what race, in your opinion, is the most representative, who will teach the cat to the process. You may need the services of a professional trainer or breeder. Well, if you want to dedicate a thoroughbred breeding, you need a lot of knowledge in the field of selection and training of cats, and you will need to work closely with your veterinarian to prevent problems. If you have a child with a cat, you can continue to monitor how comfortable an animal feels like time is feeding and cleaning. When the child begins to have other interests, immediately take care of the pet. You should also consider what the living conditions can offer your cat and seek advice from breeders. Some cats require active places to play and hunt, while the cats calm, such as phlegmatic long haired breeds may feel great in a small apartment. If you already have pets in your home, make sure that the new cat is not terrorized by a dog, war in the territory does not run with other cat already living with Your new Cat does not diversify the menu by budgie, hamster or goldfish. The Truth Regarding Gingivitis in Cats

Cats aren't exactly able to brush their own teeth to keep them in good health, which is why the majority of them have oral problems of some sort later in life. Feline gingivitis is one of the most common problems that they suffer from. This condition occurs when there is inflammation of the gums.

Bacteria is found in every cat's mouth. Problems with gingivitis in cats develop whenever this bacteria is allowed to accumulate. Bacteria in the mouth combines with old food particles and eventually turns into plaque. If the plaque isn't removed in a timely manner, then it will turn into yellow tartar.

Cats that aren't fed a proper diet can easily experience oral problems. Proper nutrition isn't enough to keep cat gingivitis at bay though. Owners need to care for their feline's teeth, ideally cleaning them after each meal.

There are various types of bacteria that can cause feline gingivitis. It isn't always caused by bacteria though, as viral infections can also lead to the condition. One of the most common diseases that causes it is cat panleukopenia.

Gingivitis in cats causes a wide variety of symptoms. Whenever your cat tries to drink or eat anything, he will experience oral pain. Thanks to the pain, many cats stop eating like they're supposed to and become anorexic. Excessive salivation is also a common occurrence. As the condition progresses, the teeth may start to decay or develop cavities.

Feline gingivitis also causes the gums to become red or swollen. The slightest contact can cause them to start bleeding, so you'll need to be careful when cleaning your kitty's teeth. Bad breath is also a common problem for cats with this oral condition.

If you take your cat to the veterinarian with some of these symptoms, he will take note of them and also ask you exactly what you're feeding your cat. Stomatitis causes some of the same symptoms as gingivitis in felines. Therefore, he may need to take a biopsy of the tissues in the mouth in order to make a definitive diagnosis.

The first thing that needs to be done to treat feline gingivitis is to remove all of the tartar that has built up on the teeth. Owners will also need to start taking care of their pet's teeth and gums better. Brushing the teeth on a daily or regular basis is very important.

Bacterial infections can easily develop thanks to gingivitis in cats. That's why cats with the disease are generally prescribed antibiotics. Antibiotic pills are usually less effective in treating these secondary bacterial infections than antibiotic creams or ointments that are applied directly to the problematic areas.

The aforementioned treatments will effectively get rid of milder cases of cat gingivitis. Felines that experience chronic problems may need more advanced treatment in the form of surgery though. It's best that treatment begins before tooth decay sets in since treatment will be more difficult at that point.

Feline gingivitis can be devastating to your cat's oral health. This is especially true if it is allowed to progress into periodontal disease. These issues can largely be prevented by regular brushing and occasional professional cleaning. Don't forget that proper nutrition plays a large role in preventing gingivitis in cats too.

It is vital that cat owners be aware that their feline can be affected by many different conditions such as anemia in felines . In case your cat does fall ill, knowing about these different conditions will help you recognize it quickly. So, head over to common-cat-diseases.com today to learn about many of these common cat diseases .

Air Cleaner For Cats- 4 Important Features To Have In A Purifier

For those of us who love cats, we are often able to overlook the hair, dander, and odort that they can produce. However, allowing these pollutants to accumulate can not only be unsightly, but can cause allergies and asthma to flare. Clearing the air with a purifier is an effective solution if the purifier has the following 4 features.

Carbon Filter---Thank goodness for carbon, because it is well-known for its ability to filter gaseous pollutants from the air. So if an air purifier is to be effective at removing urine smell it must have 10 to 15 pounds of activated carbon.

The added bonus of having carbon is that even though your main concern may be odor from your feline friend, carbon doesn't really care about the source of the odor. It will indiscriminately remove gases, odors, and chemicals that may be lurking in your air from everyday living such as cooking smells from last night's dinner, fragrances from personal products, and smells cleaning products emit.

Filter For Removing Ammonia---Remember when your grandmother used to clean windows with ammonia? That's because it's powerful stuff. And ammonia is one of the main components of urine. That's why cat urine can be such an eye-stinging experience.

In order for any cleaner to be able to remove this smell, it needs a carbon filter that has a considerable amount of activated carbon in it. But carbon alone can't effectively remove it completely.

An additive such as ammonasorb that is specifically designed to absorb the ammonia is what is needed. This additive has been shown to enhance carbon's ability to absorb the ammonia and return the air to your home smelling fresh and clean.

Filter For Dander---Cat dander can be mistaken for particles you sometimes see floating in your air. In fact, the dead skin flakes that your pet is constantly shedding are invisible to the human eye. These flakes are microscopic in size.

But the effect that they can have on someone who is allergic or asthmatic is huge. Constant exposure to high levels of dander can and often does cause sensitivity where there was previously none.

That's why it's important to have a filter that can remove micron size particles. A high-efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) filter is the best type of filter for the job because by definition, it can remove airborne particulates as small as.3 microns.

This is the type of filtration that is recommended for people with asthma and allergies, and is used by hospitals to insure clean air.

Living with a warm-blooded pet such as a cat probably means that your main concerns center around hair and dander, but HEPA filtration will also remove other well-known allergens such as dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, bacteria, and viruses.

24 Hour Cleaning Capability---A cleaner can have the best combination of filters in the entire world, but unless it can run all the time, it will constantly be playing catch up. And for you that means your air is not consistently clean. Keeping air quality high all the time is the most effective way to minimize the effects allergens can have.

A split capacitor motor is designed to run safely and effectively for long periods of time without needing a rest. Check the technical specifications to make sure that your unit can clean continuously. Allergens don't take a break and your unit shouldn't have to either.

Why Do Cats Like To Sleep So Much

One thing is for sure: cats know how to sleep. And they sleep a lot. However, so far nobody knows why they sleep so much, but you gotta admit that they are the most adorable creatures when asleep.

As they choose the weirdest place to sleep. Either on top of a dog or in a pot. You name a place and they are there :)

Well, it's a known fact that cats evolved from a long line of hunters and predators and that probably has an effect on their sleeping pattern. Their diet may also play an important role. Since they are on protein rich diet that doesn't take them a lot of time of the day, they have plenty of time to sleep.

And sometimes all they do is sleep, since they don't have things to do. Of course this applies for indoor cats. But there is always something you can find for your cat to do and stay awake and entertained.

While newborn cats, well they sleep most of the time, but believe it or not this actually keeps them safe. As they don't attract attention and by that I mean, they don't attract predators.

As for the cats in the wild, well they are constantly on alert in order to survive.

While indoor cats are sleeping, they are still active and ready to go into action. And you can see that as all cats while sleeping have their ears rotating and as soon as they hear a noise or sense that someone is coming they open their eyes to check out the situation and if safe they go back to sleep again.

And as I've already said at the beginning cats sleep basically anywhere. At the table, on a top of a piano, on the edge, anywhere.

As long as it safe and comfortable enough for it to stretch that body. :) For example when it's cold it tries to find a shaded place where it can stretch out. While during the cool winter days a cat will try to find a place warm enough, like warm sunshine or next to a heat source.

Another interesting fact is that cats like to sleep in their owners' beds. And people who use this method actually benefit from it, as it strengthens the human-feline bond and let's not forget all the warmth and the comfort your cat gives you.

And one last thing. Cats dream, too. But, unfortunately for now we can only guess what they dream about.

Five tips for choosing the best cat tree

Remove Cat Urine Smell And Stains From Your Carpet Quickly And Inexpensively

It can be stressful and time intensive looking for ways on how to get cat urine smell out of carpet. The odor in some homes I've been in have literally brought tears to my eyes! Not to mention leaving an ugly stain.

Plus it can be a really big pain requiring you to spend money and buy different cleaning products you do not have any idea if it will work.

After learning what works and what doesn't from working in my own pet service business for many years, here's what I do to inexpensively, but successfully, to get rid of cat urine smell plus spots from my personal clients carpet.

It's so simple and easy and requires just two or three actions to accomplish.

Cleaning Up New Cat Urine Stains Out Of Carpet

Step 1 - For any new stains on your carpet, you first need to absorb as much of the urine as you possibly can using newspapers or paper towels. Press straight down on them to get rid of as much fluid as is possible.

Make sure you position the paper towel or newspaper below the carpeting in the event the urine has soaked into the carpet padding.

Use as much newspapers or paper towels as required so that the stain is hardly damp.

Step 2 - Begin using fresh water to clean the spot. Perform the procedure again till the stains have disappeared. Quick and easy!

Step 3 - (You can use this final step if you would like to be certain all traces of cat urine is gone) - Use an enzyme cleaning agent, which is a product that will literally eat all odor producing bacteria, on the area. This will make certain any cat urine residue still left in the spot is eliminated. In addition, the smell is going to be removed by using this process. You can find and buy an enzyme cleaner at most local stores or on the internet.

Clean-up Those Dried Cat Urine Marks Within Your Carpeting

It will require a bit more work to successfully eliminate older marks which sometimes have set in. You most likely need to get all of them out because your pet companion possess a remarkable sense of smell and might want to go to the bathroom on the same place repeatedly if it can smell its urine there.

Step 1 - Utilizing a carpet cleaning machine, remove any chemical products in addition to cleaners you may have used to remove the stains before on the carpet.

Just use clean water inside the carpet cleaning machine because of the fact that any kind of chemical products can reduce the ability of the enzymatic cleaner (which you'll use next) at getting rid of the stain.

Avoid the use of too much water on the stain, simply because you do not want to increase the risk of the stain going into the padding beneath the carpeting!

Step 2 - Clean the stain by using an enzymatic product until the stain is no longer visible.

Step 3 - Once the cat urine stains has been visibly removed, utilize a black light flashlight in order to guarantee every last bit of cat urine is fully gone. The black light makes all indications of urine glow a purple color. It's amazing what this little device can show you that your naked eye cannot see!

If you do discover some traces of urine still left, re-apply the cleaning solution to remove it.

By getting rid of every single cat urine spot, and above all the smells out of the carpet, you'll considerably lessen the possibility of your cat urinating directly on those same spots for a second time.

Top 8 Signs that you Need to take your Cat to the Veterinarian Immediately

Would you know a cat emergency if you saw one?  I discussed feline first aid for cats and kittens (what to do in a cat emergency), but now I want to point out signs that should cause the pet owner to say, "This is a cat emergency! I need to get my cat to the veterinarian immediately."

It’s amazing the variations that I’ve seen amongst my clients in terms of how often they bring their cat to the veterinarian. I have some clients who bring their cat in if they hear one sneeze, or find one puddle of vomit. I’ve had others who hold off on bringing their kitty to the clinic until the cat is on death’s doorstep. (Fortunately, my current clients never wait that long. However, years ago when I used to practice on cats and dogs, it was a different story.)

I personally believe that cats should be examined by a veterinarian a minimum of twice a year. In adult cats, six months is the equivalent of about two years in human years. A lot can happen to a cat in six months. If not every six months, then certainly at least once a year.

There are scenarios, however, when a cat should be seen RIGHT AWAY. I’m sure there are some people who would perhaps add a few other signs to my list, however, I tried to narrow the list down to a realistic number of signs without getting too carried away.  Here are the top 8 signs that you need to take your cat to the veterinarian immediately.

1. Straining in the litterbox (especially male cats) – Some cats will go into their litter box, posture themselves to eliminate, and then just sit there and strain. It can be difficult for some cat owners to tell if their cat is posturing to urinate vs. defecate. If a cat is posturing to defecate and is straining and straining, is this an emergency? Probably not. But it should be seen as soon as possible, i.e. the next day, because this can be uncomfortable for the cat, and the longer the constipation persists, the more difficult it can be to relieve the problem later. Is straining to urinate an emergency? In a female cat, probably not. Straining to urinate can be a sign of a urinary tract infection, bladder stone, or bladder inflammation (cystitis), however, and this also can be very uncomfortable for the cat, but it’s not life threatening. In a male cat, however, it’s a different story. When a male cat is straining to urinate, he too can be afflicted with a urinary tract infection, a bladder stone, or just an inflamed bladder (cystitis). Male cats, however, can become OBSTRUCTED. This almost never happens in females. In males, this is a life-threatening condition. A male cat with an inflamed bladder may go in and out of the box, and every time he goes, he deposits just a drop or two of urine. The few drops of urine get absorbed into the cat litter, where it’s undetectable. A male cat with a urinary obstruction will go into the litter box and strain to urinate, and no urine is produced. It can be difficult or impossible for a cat owner to tell if the cat is completely obstructed and isn’t producing any urine at all, or if he’s got an inflamed bladder and is depositing little drops of urine onto the litter the moment they accumulate in his bladder. You need to err on the cautious side and BRING HIM TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY. Failure to promptly relieve the obstruction can result in kidney damage, severe metabolic derangements, and ultimately death unless the obstruction is relieved.

2. Labored breathing – Congestion from an upper respiratory infection is a common problem in cats, and cats with stuffy noses and sinuses can sometimes have audible breathing noises, especially when sleeping. (Put simply, they snore.) This is not an emergency. Some cats with inflammation in their lungs, either from an infection, or from asthma, will cough. They will hunker down, extend their neck, and make a raspy sound. This, too, is not an emergency, but should be evaluated by a vet, of course. A cat with LABORED breathing, however, is a different situation. If your cat, at rest, seems to be showing increased respiratory effort, this needs to be addressed immediately. A cat’s breathing motion – the excursions of the chest - should be barely noticeable. If you can easily see your cat inhaling and exhaling in an exaggerated fashion, as if he just ran around the block a few times, this is definitely not normal and is a cause for concern. Often, there will be a little abdominal press at the end of each breath. Again, this is not normal. He needs to be examined immediately. Unlike dogs, cats should NEVER breathe with their mouth open. Open-mouth breathing means that you take your cat to the vet NOW. If it’s after hours, find the nearest 24-hour veterinary emergency clinic. The likely causes of this include pulmonary edema – fluid within the lung tissue – which is a common sign of heart failure, or pleural effusion – fluid between the lungs and the chest wall. This fluid prevents the lungs from fully expanding. This fluid may need to be removed immediately. Removal of the fluid not only will give the cat some relief, but analysis of the fluid often helps in making the diagnosis.

3. Seizures – Whenever a cat seizures, you can basically break down the cause as either being neurologic, or being non-neurologic. Non-neurologic causes of seizures include things like liver disease (if the liver is sick and cannot detoxify the blood, the toxins in the blood can affect the brain and cause seizures), low blood calcium, and low blood sugar. Low blood sugar is much more likely to cause seizures in dogs. Cats with low blood sugar tend to act spacey and uncoordinated, as if you might imagine what a cat would look like if it were drunk. But occasionally, low blood sugar can cause seizures in cats. Neurologic causes of seizures include things like brain tumors and epilepsy. If your cat is a known diabetic and experiences a seizure, low blood sugar due to an overdose of insulin has to be considered, and you should rub some honey or corn syrup onto the gums (once the seizure subsides, to avoid getting accidentally bitten), and the cat should stop seizuring and come around to relatively normal mentation. The cat should then be taken to the veterinarian immediately. One single seizure, however, may not necessarily be an emergency. Some cats will have one seizure, will recover uneventfully, and never have another one. If a cat has one seizure, recovers pretty promptly, and seems okay, it may not need to go to the vet right this minute, however, an appointment should be set up so that the cat can be examined and some bloodwork performed to rule out the non neurologic causes. More than one seizure in a short period of time, or persistent seizures, however, needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY.

cutest vomit ever!
4. Persistent vomiting - Every cat vomits occasionally. Most of the time there is a harmless explanation for it, such as a sudden change in diet, eating too fast, or hairballs. In some instances, however, vomiting can be a serious sign of illness. When cats vomit, the cause is either a problem in the gastrointestinal system or a problem elsewhere in the body. For example, cats can vomit from a gastrointestinal disorder such as food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease. They can also vomit from systemic disorders that have nothing to do with the gastrointestinal system, such as kidney disease; if the kidneys can’t remove toxins from the bloodstream the toxins accumulate, leading to nausea and vomiting. Because vomiting has so many potential causes, diagnosing the reason for the vomiting can be challenging. An acute bout of vomiting in a cat that seems normal otherwise is seldom a cause for concern, and can be treated symptomatically at home by withholding food for a few hours and then gradually re-introducing the diet. Cats that have vomited multiple times in one day or several days in a row may need to be examined by your veterinarian. Kittens and young cats are not very discreet about what they put in their mouths. Middle aged and mature cats who should know better will also occasionally eat things they shouldn’t. Ingestion of a foreign body can cause an obstruction that prevents food from passing. Cats will vomit food persistently, and may even vomit water. Cats can get seriously dehydrated as a result, and the longer the foreign body remains lodged in the intestinal tract, the more potential damage to the gastrointestinal tract can occur. Regardless of the cause, persistent vomiting can cause dehydration and dangerous electrolyte imbalances and should be addressed promptly.

5. Bleeding – Every now and then, a cat owner will notice some blood in their cat’s urine, or in the stool, or will discover little spots of blood on the furniture or the bedspread, indicating that their kitty might be ill. This kind of bleeding is not an emergency, however, it should be investigated by your vet as soon as practical. Blood in the urine can be a sign of a painful bladder stone. Significant bleeding from a visible wound, especially if the blood is pulsating from any part of the body, warrants IMMEDIATE veterinary attention. Cats can get dangerously anemic from blood loss and can go into shock. This is so obvious that maybe I should have left this off the list, but I’m including it anyway.

6. Staggering or stumbling – There are many possible reasons for a cat to stagger or stumble. Weakness from anemia, or from a metabolic problem (excessively low potassium, too low blood sugar), or a neuromuscular problem, or a vestibular problem (infection or inflammation involving the vestibular system, which is the part of the nervous system that control balance). This list just scratches the surface. Some of the causes are relatively benign. Some of the causes, however, can be very serious. There’s no way for a cat owner to know. You have to err on the cautious side and bring the cat to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

7. Non weight-bearing lameness – Every now and then, cats will pull a muscle or sprain a joint. Usually, this manifests as a mild limp. In an older cat, arthritis is certainly a common cause for stiffness and occasional limping. If you see your cat limping, ideally, the cat should be evaluated by your vet reasonably promptly. However, waiting for a day or two and observing to see whether it is getting progressively better is a reasonable thing to do. If the limp persists after another day or two, obviously the cat should be seen. Non weight bearing lameness, however, should not wait. A cat that cannot bear weight on a limb and is walking on three legs should not be observed for a few days to see if it improves. Non-weight bearing lameness is often a sign of a fracture, dislocation, or torn ligament. These are painful injuries that need to be addressed right away. With fractures, the sooner they are repaired, the better the chance that proper healing and restoration of normal function will occur.

8. Any symptom that persists for 48 hours or longer, or gets noticeably worse quickly – I guess this is a catch-all selection, but it holds true. A cat is allowed to cough a few times during the day, with the owner observing to see if it’s a brief episode that disappears as quickly as it came on. If, however, the cat coughs all day, and the next day it does the same, then the cat needs to be examined right away. Two or three episodes of vomiting in one day may require careful observation by the owner. If the next day, the cat is eating and the vomiting has stopped, or the cat has only vomited once, it’s okay to watch for one more day and see if the vomiting has resolved. But if the cat vomits a few times on day 1, and on day 2 the vomiting persists or gets worse, the cat should be seen. The same goes for diarrhea, poor appetite, sneezing, limping, runny eyes, snotty nose… any symptom that persists for a second day, or dramatically gets worse later that day or the next day, should be evaluated by a veterinarian promptly, i.e. the next available appointment at the vet’s office.

Hopefully this list will help pet owners realize that while cats seem pretty self-sufficient (indeed, many of their issues seem to resolve on their own without much intervention on our part), there are some issues require more than just benign observation.
