Another goodbye

My super cute tiny little kitten died on sunday-monday night. He was a bit under the weather for a couple of days, did not want to eat, had diarrea, and was just very sleepy. We spent one day at Lutwala Dive, where Lutwala's Trish had all kinds of medicines and stuff that orphan kittens may need. We gave the kitten fluids and medicine for diarrea and he seemed to get much better. He started eating like crazy and was back to himself. All looked good, no worries.

Late sunday evening I suddenly noticed he was sleeping in his basket in a very weird position and that something is wrong. He had poo all over there and was looking miserable. I lifted him up, he was quiet, very very weak, was not able to stand. He had some kind of seizures a bit. I could see that he's going already, there is this look in cat's the eyes that tells it's time to say goodbye. My tiny kitten had that look. All I could do was to keep him comfortable.

He died soon after, took his last breath and said his last quiet meoow in my hand. I buried the kitten behind my house, where already 3 other cats are resting.

I am miserable and have been crying my eyes out.

I know it's impossible to save every cat. And that kittens, especially this young and without their mommies, are so, so vulnerable. Still, it's is very hard to accept. And even harder to watch a tiny life end.

They just keep on coming....

Well.... they just keep on coming! Kittens, that is.

This little fellow was found alone, screaming by the dirt road. It's one eye was badly infected, had an army of fleas (I have never seen so bad case!), a small cut in it's head and was hungry and miserable. Well, long story short: it's in my house now. Has been washed, fleas picked out with tweezers, eye infection is gone, food is available and life is safe now.

Well, my Dimmu of course gives the tiny new one a bit of hard time. Dimmu thinks this is a new toy for her to chase and play with, but the little kitten is a strong, quick one, and does not seem to mind. And when it's done with running around with Dimmu, there is the safety of  it's own basket where it's nice and warm to take a nap.

My house is kind of full already, I do realize that, but what can you do?  If there's a kitten in need, and once it hangs on to you with it's tiny paws and sharp nails, looks you in the eye and says meooow, maybe purrs a bit, I just give up. I do not have a heart to say no, or to throw tiny, needy kittens out and just say "well, good luck! Try to survive!" They need care and a safe place to grow up big enough to make it out there, in the big world.

My Seek checking out the new kitten

Cat Question: Are all orange tabby cats male and are all calico cats female?

Are all orange tabby cats male and are all calico cats female?

Hear the science behind uncommon female orange tabby cats and the extremely rare tortoiseshell or calico male cat.

(Originally posted on Catchannel.com)
Question: I have heard that all orange tabby cats are male, and to find one that is female is rare and worth up to $1,000. I also have heard that calico cats and tortoiseshell cats are female and to find a male is just as rare and prized. Is there any truth to this?

Answer: Your first statement is incorrect. Most, but certainly not all, orange tabby cats are male. Orange tabby cats are about 80/20 male to female. We have many female orange tabby cats in my practice. There is no monetary value, per se, associated with a female orange tabby cat. Calico and tortoiseshell cats, however, are almost always female.

Here's how it works. To have black and orange in the same cat, the cat needs two X chromosomes. Two X chromosomes mean the cat will be female. Male cats need a Y chromosome and are XY.

Occasionally a mutation will arise during embryonic development and a kitten will be born with an extra chromosome: XXY. The two Xs allow for the cat to be black and orange. The Y makes it a male. This is how you get a tortoiseshell or a calico male cat.

Tortoiseshell and calico male cats are uncommon (one out of 3000 are male), but don't get your hopes up about breeding these rare cats for money. As a result of this mutation, most tortoiseshell and calico male cats are sterile.

Fighting fleas... and one more kitten in my house

Most of the cats here have fleas and it's a fight you cannot win. No matter how much you wash your cats with flea shampoo, a day or two and the fleas are back.

Washing a cat is always a pleasure, both to myself and to the cat in question. My little Dimmu does not enjoy flea baths at all! She may not fight much when I am washing her, but the poor thing is shaking in shock for half an hour after the torture.

And I can tell you a soapy kitten is a slippery one!

So, Dimmu has had too much excitement lately. And now she cannot believe that I brought in another kitten today. A ginger little boy who goes and eats Dimmu's food! OMG!

A friend of mine found the ginger little boy some time ago and the kitten was just skin and bones. Now he's doing much better, has a big belly as he has been fed well, but now the friend of mine is leaving the island. We tried to find a home for the kitten, but nobody volunteered. So I figured, what the hell, I already have 8 cats and am feeding god knows how many other cats that just come to my house for food, so what's one more mouth?

So here he is. And he is a cute little one. Dimmu does not approve, of course, but I hope they will become friends. I had already been thinking it would be nice if Dimmu had someone else to play with, and someone else to bite and scratch than me! So far both Dimmu and the little boy are just trying to keep out of each other's way, but let's see, they may give up and realize that ok, it actually is quite nice to have a fellow kitten to hang with.

WHAT IS THAT????? There is no room for another kitten in MY bedroom!

Dimmu's new friend
