The history of dog teaching can be traced back to ancient periods of 127-116 B. C in the Roman Empire. One of the most successful farmers in the period, Marcus Varo, authored a document that was a form of training manual for dogs and puppies that taught these animals how to heard the many livestock. Not only does this document prove the existence of animal coaching at the period, but it also addresses the need to start the coaching process when they are still puppies.

In 1848, one of the earliest books on this type of coaching was published by W. N. Hutchison and it majorly talked about specialized coaching of dogs for hunting like setters and pointers. The form of dog coaching advocated by this book is more of a reward based system than the punishment system. This idea was backed by a Forest and Stream writer, Stephen Hammond, who suggested rewarding activities and praises to well behaved hunting dogs.

In Germany, Konrad Most initiated dog coaching for police work to serve during the years of the First World War. He researched on this and the various the services that these dogs could offer. The onset of the war in 1914 saw him being delegated to be in charge of directing the use of these trained dogs in war and afterwards in the Second World War, he was in charge of the Experimental Institute for Armed Forces Dogs.

The learning process of dogs is usually effected anytime the dog interacts with the surrounding, mostly through three channels including; classical conditioning, involving the association of two different stimuli by the dog, sensitization which is a non-associative and finally operant conditioning which associates an antecedent with its specific consequence.

There are many different effective methods of dog coaching in the world, all these working towards changing the behavior of dogs. All the methods have their own good and bad sides, and they include; Koehler method, training according to the dogs relationship with the environment, negative reinforcements, clicker training and many more. In all these methods, the trainer is usually required to ensure that he/she understands the dogs personality, punishes and offers reinforcement at the right time, and he should also communicate the instructions regularly to the dog.

Dogs can be trained to handle specialized duties like law enforcement, rescuing activities, performing searches, entertainment, hunting and so on. The American Kennel Club initiated obedience trials in 1935 and they insisted on the three basic commands which included lie down, which instructed the dog to remain the current position, basked which ordered the dog to go to a particular place, and heel which means come with me.

Trained dogs have had great significance in the world today, evident by the many activities that they assist in achieving. A trained dog makes a perfect pet while the coaching process can be a very interesting activity.
