Process Of Training War Dogs

By Stephen Stevens

Dogs in the battlefield have struggled to be appreciated for a long time but that is still to be achieved. As a trainer building trust between you and the dog should be your priority if you want it to follow your instructions. War dogs use non-verbal communication so when training them to think like soldiers concentrate more on the action and not on your words.

It is very expensive to prepare them for the battle depending on the special training it should receive. Training can only start if they follow those small commands you give it like to stand or sit down. You must be consistent on the place you will be training this soldier. Let it be trained in a fenced area where no distractions take their attention away.

You need to take them to that place as many times as possible for it to understand that is the training area. It would make it easy for you since every time you get to that spot the dog will be obedient. It knows it is time for training and enjoys being there. Maintain a nice relationship for the dog not to feel like it is a chore but enjoys the moment instead.

As a trainer let the dog respect you. Respect is essential between a human being and a dog because that will be the only time it will adhere to your instructions. Taking the dog for a walk and giving it nice treatment will not make the animal respect you. That is love therefore respect is acquired when you show the animal that you are ready to protect it in times of danger.

During training one needs to separate their emotions from commands to train effectively. Dogs unlike humans will not respond they can only act. Most people do not get it and end up overworking themselves thus trainers should focus more on what they are doing not the words. They respect someone who seems powerful and in control therefore take charge during training.

Appreciation is essential during the training period. It motivates the dog to have the urge to learn more. Treat them with nice meal or their favourite game after a successful training day. When a dog does the desired behaviour mark it in a certain sound that they can understand and keep doing better. Let them understand that the sound you make gives them a reward afterwards.

Punishment should be carried out once in a while in case they misbehave. Most training grounds are against this arguing out that it is breaking animal rights. However little disciplining does not hurt. Do not overreact and beat the dog ruthlessly just make them understand why what they did is wrong. It could be hard without beating but worth trying.

They must eat well and exercise a lot during the training period. It helps their brains to function effectively and grasp all the lessons. These dogs experience trauma during deployment therefore train them how to relate with new people. They are our next heroes and future law enforcers, they should be treated with dignity.
