Guide For Coming Up With Your Own Custom Drapes

By Gary Carter

Your choice of curtains can either make or break your home. Be careful about what you choose when making this decision. You can greatly improve the look of your house by upgrading your window treatments. In order to make them unique, so that they stand out, instead of going for the usual curtains, consider getting custom drapes based on your preferences. Here are some helpful tips to guide you through the process.

Measure the size of your windows. This will help you know how much fabric you need to get. A good rule of thumb is that you should get fabric that is one and a half times the size of your windows. This allows the fabric to hang well and overlap when it is hanged up. Just to be sure, measure the windows twice, so that you can get the correct size. Measure the length, as well as the width of the windows, depending on how low you want the curtains to hang.

The next thing you need to do is to buy the fabric that you will need to make the curtains. Since you are likely going to need lots of material, find a cheap place to buy it from. See if you can get it at a discounted rate. Check the fabric and make sure that it has no stains or tears and that it is completely okay.

Think carefully about what colors and designs will work well in your house. This should add to the beauty of your house instead of clashing with it or competing with other existent decorations. You can go for a plain design or choose from different prints and patterns.

You need lining for the fabric. The lining has so many functions. This includes blacking out the light from outside, preventing heat from escaping outside and to give privacy. The lining also protects the fabric from being damaged by the sun. It also helps to make the curtain look fuller. You can use one lining or two linings, depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Launder the fabric before sewing it up. Then iron it. Washing it prevents it from shrinking after it has already been sewn up, which can affect how the curtain looks like. You need to iron the fabric and straighten it out, so as to get better measurements when cutting it out or sewing it up.

The next step is to have the window treatments tailored. If you are a good seamstress, then you can handle this part on your own. However, if you are not talented in this area, you are better off having an expert sew it up for you. Another choice is to make an order from shops that specialize in making bespoke orders. Just let them know your preferences and they will do it for you.

The last step is to put up the curtains. See if you like the way it hangs. If it is okay and everything has been sewed up well, part yourself on the back and be happy with the results achieved. If on the other hand you are not happy with the results, make the necessary changes until you are satisfied with the results.
