Because of lesser time it took to developed and a a much better quality, films became the dominant juggernaut in usage for photography for years to come. This was until the much more convenient digital camera was born but film did not die out because various people love the quality that film has over digital versions.
Originally, when it was invented, photos were monochrome. Also known as black and white, monochrome stayed popular even though color was already invented. This is due to peoples love of how classic these look. This plays with how people love the past and black and white style shows that. Tones are shown in contrast to show the effect of light and dark areas.

Back then, photos would take a really long time to print out and by the time it was, the colors would fade because of light that fills the room.
