Surveyors are professionals who specialize in surveying the surface of the earth for various purposes. They work to determine angles and distances between points on the surface of the earth as well as below and above the surface. They also pinpoint the exact locations of various features by using reference points that are already known. In this field, this is a commonly used technology alongside satellite systems which are used to locate reference points with the highest precision points. The level of accuracy in the records collected is high nowadays thanks to modern technology which has also made work easier.

The collection of highly accurate data is done using automated systems and GPS units. The automated systems used are referred to as robotic total stations. The information collected about the terrain being surveyed is important for decision making. Computer systems are then used to analyze the data that has been collected in the field. Surveyors can then interpret the analyzed data in order to make informed decisions.

Another important technology that these professionals use is the geographic information systems, usually abbreviated as GIS. This technology allows surveyors to present spatial information visually as charts, reports, and maps. An example of an instance where GIS can be used is when a surveyor overlays images collected from satellites with GIS data such as tree density in an area to form digital maps.

Digital maps can be used to advice a business or government agencies on where landfills, homes, certain man made features and roads can be planned or set up. In the modern world surveying plays a very important role. Today this professional seems to be growing with every passing day.
