To Know About Plasma Cutting Services

By Kathleen Young

The word plasma can be defined as a collection of particles that are charged. Usually, these particles have almost a similar amount of ions and electrons. They also exhibit several gas-like properties. However, the difference between plasma and gas is that plasma is a good conductor of electricity. For one to have a better understanding, they can perceive it as a stream of gas that is heated electrically. What plasma cutting services entail.

Plasma gas contains electrons which are not just revolving around the atoms, but rather keep jumping from one atom to the next. What happens through plasmas might seem complex, but the process of making use of this technology to chop through metals is a straightforward one. Needs to be done is to constrict the jet of electricity moving through the gas via a tiny opening.

When the gas comes out through the opening, it is very dense and moves at a very fast speed. As a result, it can easily melt and blow through most metals that exist. It is this gas that is referred to as a plasma torch. Plasma cutting refers to a process that is used to cut through electrically conductive materials using an accelerated jet of hot plasma.

One can only use this technology to cut through materials with ability of conducting electricity. Among many others, stainless steel, carbon steel, copper, aluminum, and brass are included. Industrial construction, fabrication industry/shops, automotive restoration, automotive repair, and salvage/scrapping operations are areas where this technology is greatly applied.

This technology allows for high speed and precision cutting at a significantly low cost. As a result, it is used in both large scale industrial applications as well as small operations undertaken by hobbyists and technology enthusiasts. CNC technology was applied to plasma technology in the late 1980s through 1990s. This gives it the ability to cut complex shapes through metals within a short period of time.

Similar to all other pieces of technology, careful use of plasma is required to prevent damage and injury. When using this technology, safety should be ensured every time. Wearing eye protection gear to avoid damages to the eye is among the vital safety measures one has to deploy. Arc eye is the term used to refer to eyesight that is damaged by the technology. Also, debris can cause damages to the eye.

Using green lens shade number 5 is the best for eye protection. A person should wear shade 8 when less than 300 Amps of current is used in the arc. The arc can be hidden by the work piece so that it is not visible outside. In that case, one does not need to wear eye protection because the arc is harmless if it is not visible. Similarly, one should only wear a lighter shade of eye protection when the visibility of the arc is not clear.

The model of machine being used determines how starting the arc happens. Some machines start the arc by making contact between the work piece and the torch. On the other hand, other machines start the arc using a high voltage circuit and a high frequency.
