How Can I Make a Patch for My Cat's Scab?

A scab may form on your cat because of a number of conditions, including abrasions, allergic reactions, skin infections, immune system diseases, external parasites and excessive grooming, according to Vetinfo. Take your cat to a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of your cat's scab. Once your cat is given a clean bill of health, you may make a bandage or "patch" for the area to prevent your cat from licking the scab and delaying the healing process.

Instructions

    1

Shave the hair around the scab with electric clippers to better access the area and allow a bandage to stick to the skin.

    2

Boil 2 cups of water and combine it with 1 teaspoon of salt to make a sterile saline solution. Allow the solution to cool to room temperature. Soak a sterile gauze pad in the solution and apply the pad over the scab to wipe away any debris and sterilize the area.

    3

Inspect the scab for signs of infection, such as bruising, swelling or yellow discharge or pus. If you see signs of infection, soak the scab in the saline solution to soften it until it comes off. This will open and help drain the wound. Clean the open wound with a chlorhexidine solution to disinfect it. Make the solution by combining 1 ounce of 2 percent chlorhexidine solution with 1 gallon of water. Wipe down the area with a sterile gauze pad soaked in the solution.

    4

Apply triple antibiotic ointment to the scab or abrasion. The ointment prevents infection and keeps the area moist to promote healing.

    5

Cut a sterile gauze pad to fit over the scabbed area. Attach it to your cat's skin with medical tape. Put the tape along the edges of the gauze to keep it in place.

    6

Wrap the bandaged area in a piece of linen cloth or place a cat-sized T-shirt on your cat to keep the bandage in place and protect it from your cat's licking. Tie the linen in place, keeping the cloth snug around the area, but not too tight that it cuts off circulation. If the cat T-shirt fits loosely, keep it in place with medical tape along the bottom of the shirt.
