How to Prevent Feline Diabetes

Feline diabetes mellitus can be a very common disease. It is still unclear exactly why cats become ill with this potentially debilitating disease, but owners of a diabetic cat know that it can be very costly and heart breaking to care for a cat who is suffering from diabetes. It is possible to help prevent diabetes in your cat, which can help give your cat a chance to live a healthy, long life with the family it loves.

Avoid feeding cats a kibble or wet cat food that is high in carbohydrates. Watch for ingredients such as wheat, soy and corn on the food's label. If possible, avoid these ingredients all together or make sure they are lower on the list of ingredients.

Feed the cat food that is filled with quality ingredients, such as beef, lamb or chicken. Watch for the words "by product" on the package's label. These are inferior ingredients and should be avoided.

Give the cat plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration is a factor that can lead to feline diabetes.

Avoid giving the cat sugary treats that are intended for human consumption. As with humans, these foods can contribute to diabetes in cats.

Avoid over feeding the cat. Feed the cat two moderate sized meals a day, no more.

Exercise the cat daily. Pull a string around the room and encourage the cat to chase it or take your cat on a walk with a leash and collar. This will help the cat avoid diabetes and rid it of any unwanted weight as well.
