Chihuhua is recognized by some kennel clubs as the small dog breed. The name came from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. This breed comes in many head shapes, coat lengths, colors, and sizes. The history behind Chihuahuas is a big puzzle as their origin is a mystery. No breed standards are available to govern the height of the dog. Weight and overall proportions are the main characteristics defined by breed standards. In general, however, they reach a height of between 15-23 centimeters. Some have been known to attain a height of 30-38 centimeters. UK and US breed standards place a weight limit at 2.7 kilograms for conformation purposes.

One can buy a chihuahua of any color combination they want, ranging from marked or splashed to solid. The coat color may be solid white, solid black, spotted or sabled among other options. There is a great level of variance in the color combinations. Among the commonest colors are brown, cream, black, white, chocolate, mixed, fawn, red, and brown. All the colors and patterns are equally valuable and important.

The temperament of the grandparents and parents often influence that of offsprings a lot. These dogs should not be kept in homes with small children because they attack easily. They often become fiercely loyal to one person alone. Once, loyal to that person, they may become too protective against other animals and people.

Chihuahuas are very unfriendly to other dog breeds. However, they coexist well with other Chihuahuas. They can have some very extreme traits that one can rectify by socializing them from a tender age. Handling should be left to children who are at least thirteen years of age for safety purposes.
