Information On Ragdoll Kittens For Sale

By Diane Turner

A ragdoll refers to a cat species with distinct colorpoint coat and blue-colored eyes. Its development was done in the 1960s by a breeder named Ann Baker, who was an American. Placidity and docility are some of the most identifying features of the breed. When in need for ragdoll kittens for sale, the best way to go about it is by first, understanding the basics about the breed.

Breeders use qualities such as docility, floppiness, and calmness to describe these cats when marketing. These qualities are believed to have been inherited from Birman breed and Persian cats. Other people hold a different opinion, stating that the qualities resulted from genetic mutation. This last belief has caused some breeders to breed ragdolls away from calmness and docility.

The temperament of ragdolls is very friendly and gentle. They run to the door to meet their owner and welcome them home. They enjoy being held and carried on the lap a lot. Once they seat on the lap or when they are held in the arms, they remain relaxed and quiet. It is this behavior that led to their name. When they are called, they come running. It holds among the highest positions in terms of intelligence. It is also highly trainable.

Even though ragdolls are docile, it should not be thought that they are inactive. They enjoy playing with their owners and other family members. They enjoy playing with toys and will often retrieve them when they are thrown at them. One can train them to use a scratching post. The cats are not very vocal like other breeds and only vocalize to a small extent. They remind the owner to pet them or provide meals.

Ragdolls tend to have certain health problems commonly. Among the health problems that affect this species may be genetic or not. Common health conditions include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, calcium oxalate bladder stones, and feline infectious peritonitis. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is one of the inherited heart diseases that affect most cats. The presence of the mutation that carries this condition can be identified through a DNA-based test. One is advised to have this test done prior to buying a kitten.

Shedding and matting is reduced in ragdolls because the long fur contains little undercoat. However, little matting and shedding should not be used as an excuse for not grooming. Grooming needs to be done weekly. One should use a comb made of stainless steel to comb so that tangles do not form. Matting is common at the joints where the leg meets with the body. Thus, these regions should be given extra attention.

The fur may be made smooth after combing using a curry brush. Any loose hair left on the coat is removed by a curry brush. When grooming, one should avoid applying excessive force or pulling the hair. Being gently promotes friendship with the cat and make the whole exercise enjoyable for it.

Grooming requirements may partly depend on the living conditions of the cat. When grooming, one should consider dental hygiene too. The teeth and mouth need to be cleaned every day. Some attention to be given to the ears too.
