How Canine SAR Is Useful

By Amanda Powell

There are situations where people or objects might get lost in the woods, water, snow and so on. Looking for them can be very challenging more so when you do not know where to start. Canine SAR is very helpful under such circumstances. They are able to search for the missing subject with their handlers speeding up the entire mission. Here are some of the importance they have

There is training that the animals have to undergo before working. These dogs work by smelling scent emitted by humans. These particles are airborne and will be carried by wind through larger distances. They are trained to locate the scent to where it is coming from. They, therefore, can do this after a short while locating the missing individuals.

Through research, it has been found out that they are able to cover larger areas than human beings. They can cover an area meant for about fifty trained individuals. This makes the work quick, easy and cost saving in return. Placement, on the other hand, needs an understanding of what should be done together with the strength and shortcomings involved.

The trained animals are capable of working either during day or night time. They, however, are helpful during the night when the circumstance is crucial such as finding an injured individual who is missing. They will go for the search when the other personnel are regrouping. The concentration of scent is high at night due to the still air making it easy in locating. The dogs can also see without any difficulty at night and hear sounds from far away.

They can still be used when the weather patterns are not so good. This may be during windy, rainy, sunny conditions and so on. Sometimes the strong winds, rain or snow might damage the traces, but the scent will not be damaged whether the subject is dead or alive. They will be able to follow the scent to where it is coming from. These trained dogs work well in rural farms, snowfields, heavy bushes, rural farms and so forth.

These types of trained dogs are flexible as they can be transported by any means that humans will use. This includes boats, helicopters, snowmobiles, light aircraft and so on. Some are trained to be lowered from a helicopter. The handler most of the time will not allow to be separated from the animal while being transported. They will always be together even when not working. This ensures a strong bond that is required.

There are a number of characteristics that are looked into before a dog is taken for training. The first considerations is age as it needs to be fully grown, at least eighteen months old. The task to be done requires skills hence there are particular breeds chosen. This may be a German shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler, giant schnauzers, golden retrievers and so on. They are best since they learn fast.

There are three kinds of missions for the animals namely trailing, air scent and following ground disturbances. They are useful in helping law enforcement find answers to a crime scene, in drowning situations, collapsed buildings, earthquakes and much more. Such animals can be relied on when the situation is tough.
