What Can You Give Your Dog For Cold & Cough?

To many people, dogs and cats are members of the family. So when they show signs of a cold, owners will naturally be concerned. But, with a little knowledge of dog and cat colds, pet owners can provide the best care to their furry family members.

Symptoms

Dogs and cats have the same cold symptoms as humans. Symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, sneezing and runny nose, eyes or mouth.

Causes

Canine and feline colds are caused by viral, bacterial or fungal infections in the respiratory system. Pets with cold systems should be examined by a veterinarian to rule out more serious illnesses with the same symptoms.

Treatment

Once more serious illnesses are ruled out by a veterinarian, dogs and cats with colds can be treated at home. Keep pets warm, dry and well rested and provide plenty of TLC. Pets with colds will appreciate lukewarm chicken soup and a few minutes in a warm, steamy bathroom. Runny noses can be wiped with warm washcloths. A cold will last 7-10 days.

Complications

Sick dogs and, especially, cats (who can't smell test their food while congested) may stop eating and drinking. It is very important to keep pets nourished while they heal. Watch for symptoms getting worse as a cold can lead more serious secondary infections.

Is it Contagious?

While humans cannot catch colds from their pets (or vice versa), colds can be passed to others of the same species. Affected pets in multiple pet homes should be quarantined until healed.
