Treating Feline Constipation with a Teaspoon of Canned Pumpkin

Constipation in cats is a common occurrence that can stem from a number of different sources. Though it can be caused by rectal or anal disease, foreign objects that cannot be expelled or injuries, isolated cases of constipation are usually not a cause for concern. One common cure and preventative for feline constipation is pumpkin.

Determine how much canned pumpkin your cat needs. According to Earth Clinic Folk Remedies, cats under 15 pounds require between one and two teaspoons of canned pumpkin per meal, while cats that weigh more than that require between one and two tablespoons of canned pumpkin per meal.

Mix the canned pumpkin into your cat's food with every meal.

Monitor your cat's stool. Within a few days, the cat should be defecating normally. If you notice runny stool or stool that is too soft, cut back on the amount of pumpkin you are placing in the cat's food.
